Handle the movement of personnel and equipment, including cargo, by air, rail and road.

Your work

Overview
Movements Controllers are responsible for the movement of troops and cargo according to RAF operational needs. You’ll operate IT systems, load and unload transport aircraft and accompany cargo all over the world.
You could check in passengers flying to the Gulf or operate a forklift truck, loading freight onto an aircraft. It could be your job to use IT systems to plan aircraft loads, weight and balance. You could work in a port where shipments of cargo and explosives are handled, or help put together an under-slung load for a helicopter.

Like most people in the RAF, you’ll probably move jobs every few years, and each job is known as a tour. Within your first few years, you’ll probably be detached overseas for anything from a few days to a few months. You may also have a long-term posting to one of our bases in Cyprus, Gibraltar or Canada.

Your first tour

For your first tour, you’ll be posted to either RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire, or RAF Lyneham in Wiltshire, where you’ll load and unload aircraft, complete the necessary documentation and handle both passengers and cargo. You’ll also receive structured on-the-job training and competency checks.

Your training

Recruit training
Your career will start with nine weeks of recruit training at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire. The course is designed to help you adjust to a military environment. As well as fitness and military training, you’ll also learn about the RAF lifestyle.

Specialist training
The next step is a specialist training course at RAF Brize Norton, which lasts about five months. This course will give you a basic understanding of the Movements Controller role, which includes transport procedures and regulations, aircraft loading and the handling of passengers and cargo. At the end of the course you’ll get your first posting and be on your way to gaining an NVQ Level 2 in Handling Air Passengers, or Airfield Ramp Operations, and an Apprenticeship in Movements.

Ongoing development
As your career progresses, we’ll continue to train you in new skills. After further training courses, you’ll qualify to plan aircraft loads, calculate weight and balance and handle dangerous air cargo. There are also opportunities to undertake management and leadership training and complete a range of driving qualifications.

Your future

Prospects
You’ll initially join the RAF for a period of nine years. After a year you’ll be eligible for promotion to Senior Aircraftman/woman if you pass a trade ability test. Further promotion to the rank of Corporal and beyond is by competitive selection.

Transferable skills
The NVQ and Apprenticeship you can gain are as valuable in the civilian world as they are in the RAF – which means that whenever you decide to leave the RAF, you’ll be well placed to find a job in airport handling or the transport industry.
